TotalEnergies Plans Mozambique Return

TotalEnergies Chairperson and CEO Patrick Pouyanne is completing a two-nation visit to Rwanda and Mozambique, meeting with the Presidencies of both countries in preparation for the company’s return to Cabo Delgado. Having declared force majeure on its Mozambique Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project in April 2021, the company is paving the way for a return to the gas-rich region in Mozambique.

During the meeting with H.E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, TotalEnergies Chairperson and CEO Patrick Pouyanne discussed the company’s return to Mozambique, while additionally signing a Memorandum of Understanding to advance TotalEnergies penetration in Rwanda’s energy sector.

Pouyanne stated that “This collaboration agreement illustrates TotalEnergies’ commitment to deploying its multi-energy strategy in Africa, particularly in Rwanda, a country with a booming economy.”

Now, Pouyanne will travel to Maputo to meet with H.E. Filipe Nyusi, President of Mozambique, to discuss the logistics surrounding the company’s return to the country. Additionally, the two parties are expected to clarify the role Rwanda will play in the $20-billion LNG project, with the country having provided military support to Mozambique in the wake of the insurgency in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. Rwanda continues to supply security for the project.

The return of TotalEnergies to Mozambique will be significant for both the country and the wider region. The LNG project represents one of the biggest gas developments in Africa, signalling a new era of clean energy growth for the continent.
