OPEC: Africa to Add 4.2M BPD Oil Demand by 2050

Africa is expected to add approximately 4.2 million barrels per day (bpd) in incremental oil demand by 2050, according to intergovernmental organization OPEC World Oil Outlook 2050.

Announced by Eng. Mohammed Attaba, Senior Downstream Oil Industry Analyst, OPEC during a presentation at this year’s MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power 2025 conference and exhibition in Dakar, the projection comes as Africa is set to increase its population by 1 billion within the outlook period.

“The largest contributions to future demand growth will be road transportation, petrochemical and aviation,” Eng. Attaba stated.

In line with Africa’s major oil demand growth, it was announced that the continent’s long-term refining capacity additions will keep pace with approximately 3 million bpd being added during the forecast period.

The World Oil Outlook also projects that African crude and condensate exports will remain stable, driven by a strong increase in crude use.
