MSGBC 2026 to Examine New Technical View of Guinea-Conakry’s Offshore
Guinea-Conakry’s offshore remains largely unexplored, with only three wells drilled across 27 blocks, but industry interest in the acreage is growing. Eni’s agreement for 15 offshore blocks in June 2026 ended a prolonged exploration hiatus in the country. At MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power 2026 in Dakar, Dr. Boubacar Bah, Coordinator of Petroleum Research and Geology at Guinea-Conakry’s National Petroleum Company (SONAP), will deliver “A New Chapter in Guinea’s Exploration,” a technical presentation on what new data and evaluation work show about the basin and how investors can access it.
Guinea-Conakry’s limited drilling history has still produced valuable geological insights. Sabu-1, drilled by U.S. independent Hyperdynamics and completed in 2012 in 710 meters of water, encountered hydrocarbons in several Upper Cretaceous sandstone layers, evidence of an active petroleum system. Fatala-1, drilled in 2017 in 2,897 meters of water and the deepest-water well offshore Africa at the time, added data on the region’s Cenomanian channel deposits. Bah will place the well results within the wider petroleum system, which includes at least three identified source rocks, Mesozoic carbonate and clastic reservoirs, and Cretaceous turbidite fan plays with analogues along the margin.
New technology is giving explorers a clearer view of the acreage. Eni is conducting a basin-scale evaluation of its 15 blocks, which cover about 49,089 km². Alongside modern 3D seismic and RockAVO, a TGS rock physics tool integrating well and seismic data, the work is updating how Guinea-Conakry’s offshore is rated, including deepwater tracts yet to be tested.
SONAP is also working to bring new partners into the remaining acreage. The company established Guinea-Conakry’s first national seismic data visualization center with SLB and TGS, and Bah’s presentation will cover access to data and reprocessing, open blocks and the country’s legal and fiscal framework, with SONAP serving as the gateway for investors.
Guinea-Conakry’s progress forms part of wider exploration activity across the MSGBC basin, where Chevron has expanded its position in Guinea-Bissau and Eni has also signed for Block A1 in The Gambia. Taking place December 1–3 at the Abdou Diouf International Conference Center (CICAD) in Dakar, MSGBC 2026 will connect the region’s governments and national oil companies with the operators and investors assessing its frontier acreage.
