The Gambia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has announced the country has reached a 74% national electrification rate and is on track to hit 90% by the end of 2025.
Speaking during the MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power 2025 conference and exhibition, Lamin Camara, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, The Gambia emphasized that ongoing grid upgrades, regional interconnections and renewable energy investments are accelerating access nationwide.
“Our intention is to add the remaining 10 to the national grid by the end of the year as part of our vision to reach 100% electrification,” he stated.
The announcement comes as West Africa pursues a paradigm shift through the West African Power Pool, opening new avenues for cross-border power trading and investment. The Gambia’s progress aligns with this wider regional push, supported by initiatives from the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), which has highlighted the strong gas development potential in emerging markets such as Senegal and Mauritania.
“With continued investment, regional integration and a balanced energy mix, countries in the West African region are well-positioned to leverage future gas and power opportunities,” stated Dr. Abubakar Abbas, Senior Energy Forecast Analyst, GECF.
Expanded regional gas and power cooperation, the Forum notes, will be key to boosting reliability and affordability across the MSGBC basin.
