With the Angolan solar project nearing completion, the partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding providing for the construction of new solar PV plants that aim to improve electricity access in emerging markets around the world. Moreover, Hitachi Energy, Sun Africa and UGT Renewables currently have 12 GW of utility-scale projects under negotiation with governments across Africa, Europe and Asia.

“Our first collaboration in Angola was a huge success, both for ourselves and the government of Angola, on behalf of whom we developed the project. We have developed a relationship of trust with Hitachi Energy and an efficient and effective way of working that benefits all the stakeholders with whom we work,” stated Adam Cortese, CEO of Sun Africa and UGT Renewables.

According to the terms of the recently signed, non-exclusive agreement, the companies will target the rollout of well-integrated solar power solutions in a bid to ramp up electrification and climate change mitigation measures. Initially, the collaboration will see the parties working on early stages of project implementation and collaborating with both regional and international stakeholders to develop environmentally sustainable energy solutions.

Sun Africa and UGT Renewables will be responsible for the development of the projects – which will be transferred to the designated operator upon completion – while Hitachi Energy will be responsible for engineering solutions for optimized power collection packages and high-voltage grid connections, as well as supervisory control and data acquisition via a system that monitors the grid connection to improve flexibility and optimization. The agreement stipulates that each project will be fully financed and have an operations and maintenance plan in place.

“We are delighted to be working with Sun Africa and UGT Renewables to bring utility scale emission-free energy projects to a growing number of countries in the world,” stated Johan Soderstrom, Executive Vice President, Head of Regions, Europe, Middle East and Africa for Hitachi Energy. “The combination of their business model and our solutions helps countries develop their economies, progress towards net zero, and provide their people with access to clean and reliable electricity.”
