GECF Secretary General, HE Eng. Mohamed Hamel, stated that “GRI will progressively be a platform for cooperation on technology and a vehicle to develop partnerships with research centers and universities of member countries and other similar institutions from around the world.”

The decision for Algeria to host the GRI follows the country’s gas exports reaching a new peak of 56 billion cubic meters in 2022 as both production and demand soared owing to the Russian-Ukraine war, energy transition-related policies and increases in economic activity post COVID-19.

Algeria has also kickstarted a number of measures – including signing a number of memoranda of understandings to maximize exploration, production and the monetization of gas with Italian major, Eni, as well as with the Algerian government for the Maghreb-Europe Gas Pipeline – to enhance its capabilities within the gas industry.
